Magyarorszag, Magyarorszag!

Boys, good luck tonight!!Let's repeat that 1953 victory!

A Bit of Hungary

Well, after consuming 4 of these and now buzzing on sugar, I decided I would give you a little tour of my beautiful country, Hungary, mainly through little interesting facts. So here we go...

  • Capital : Budapest
  • Area : 93 030 km2 ( 35 910 sq.miles )
  • Population : 10 million
  • Population of Budapest : 2 million
  • Form of goverment : Republic
  • Flag : red, white and green equal size horizontal stripes
  • President : there is a president however in my opinion he is not representing the Hungarian nation
  • Prime minister : there is a prime minister however in my opinion he is not representing the Hungarian nation
  • Climate : continental (but mainly very cold in winter and very hot in summer)
  • Official language : Hungarian
  • Administration : 19 counties
  • Hungarian name : Magyarorszag (Magyar = Hungarian, orszag = country, land)

... We call ourselves 'magyar'. Loud and proud. Even when on holiday abroad.

... Hungarians are very opinionated. They have an opinion even if they don't have a clue about the subject.

.... We love politics. We don't have a choice. Our every day-existence may depend on who gets elected.

... We ring the church bells every day at noon. This custom is based on the order of the Pope and because it was in the same year as the year of the battle of Nandorfehervar ( Janos Hunyadi against the Turks ) most people associate these two events.

... We celebrate the so called 'name-day' which is a calendar day related to your first name. The origin of this custom comes from the Catholic Saints who are thought to defend people with the same first name.

... We celebrate Easter Monday not just Easter Sunday. On Monday men go to visit their women friends/relatives/colleagues and sprinkle them with various perfumes. Women don't really enjoy having multiple smells by the end of that day. In return women give small presents to men like painted eggs (recently it's just painted hard boiled eggs), chocolate, drinks or cookies. The origin of this custom comes from the villages where guys poured cold fresh water on girls believing to keep them nice and pretty.

... We celebrate our new grain crops and bread on every 20th of August. This day is also the celebration of our country founder king St. Istvan I.

... Caused by smoking and stressful lifestyle the average lifetime in Hungary is about 7-8 years less than in the USA, and based on statistics we have high rate heart attack and cancer.

... Hungarians don't really go to the pub. Pubs are called 'kocsma' and are filthy and frequented only by heavy drinkers. What I mean by heavy drinkers is people starting there at 6am and leaving at around 9pm. Magyars like to drink at home.Clever.

... Although people think Hungarian is similar to Russian or Polish (why?!!it still boggles the mind!), the Hungarian language is a Finno-Ugric language, unrelated to the other languages of central Europe. It is more similar to Finnish.

... The first subway system in Europe was built in Budapest. It looks just like the New York subway.

... We use our first and last names in different order. The family name is the first.

... And last but not least please don't ask if we're hungry. We don't like it.

The Da Vinci Code - The Movie

I can't wait to see the film!!!I loved the book; read it twice. More than 40 million copies were sold worldwide. I loved the storyline, the so called 'facts', the characters, everything.
But one thing I cannot understand: Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon????????
I mean, please...
Here is the description of Robert Langdon from The Da Vinci Code:
"Although not overly handsome in a classical sense, the forty-year old Langdon had what his female colleagues referred to as an "errudite" appeal--wisps of gray in his thick brown hair, probing blue eyes, an arrestingly deep voice, and the strong, carefree smile of a collegiate athlete. A varsity diver in prep school and college, Langdon still had the body of a swimmer, a toned, six-foot physique that he vigilantly maintained with fifty laps a day in the university pool."
And now here is a picture of Tom Hanks just to remind you:

And 'arrestingly deep voice'? 'Body of a swimmer'? Tom Hanks?Really?
Director Ron Howard's other choices were: Russell Crowe, Ralph Fiennes, Hugh Jackman, and George Clooney .
Well, I don't know. Clooney would have been better. Then again, it doesn't matter; I'm sure the film will be brilliant even with TH. Still, shame about Clooney.

Oh God!

Seen it at Xtine and had to steal it. Please someone take Tom Cruise's pills away!!FAST!

The fever monster struck again

Last night was truly horrible. We went to the park and then my friend Melinda and her babyboy Zak came over to play. Oddly by then Nia lost interest in playing and was very whingey and unhappy. I put her down to sleep which I haven't done for ages as she only has one lunchtime nap and that's it.
So I should have known something wasn't right. I woke Nia 2 hours later at 7pm and she was boiling hot! I took her temperature and it was 39.8 Celsius. Now, I know other babies had temperatures like this but Nia's highest so far was about 38.5 so it never even went close to 39 let alone almost 40!
Jason was out at a Charity Party so panic set in immediately. See, when I was 9 months pregnant, Jay's auntie came over to us and said that her kids ALL had fits when they were feverish and their eyes rolled back and they were convulsing, etc. From then on whenever Nia had the slightest temperature I was on full alert and was staring in her face to catch the first sign of her going into a fit. Pathetic, I know but it's just me; I'm petrified of anything remotely dangerous happening to her.
So at 7pm I gave her Calpol and put her in a lukewarm bath which I made colder and colder every minute. That kinda did the trick and I could put her down at 9.
I managed to watch both House and Grey's Anatomy (which I'm very grateful for) and almost on cue at 11:01 I heard Nia cry out. I ran into her room and she was boiling!! Her temperature was 39.9!
If I was panicking 2 hours before this, then by now I was histerical. Not only was I alone, I don't drive and we had no cash in the house, so had I had to take Nia to hospital I couldn't even have called a goddamn taxi. I gave her more Calpol and put her into the cold bath again and by then she was shaking and screaming, God, it was horrible!
Jason got home almost 2 hours later and by then, although still feverish, she was much better and all of us could go to sleep. I slept in Nia's room eyes wide open, totally alert, but she was fine and slept well. I had the most vivid dreams whenever I fell asleep from me being chased by people to having my jeans' pockets full of £20 notes (now THAT was pleasant!).
Today has been great so far . Nia had a liiiiiiittle temp in the morning but by 10 am she was fine and we even managed to go out to the park and she played with her little friends.
Jason says we have to be prepared for days (or nights) like this but I can't help it: I will never get used to it. When I'm sick it's one thing; I know I'll be ok and I can take the pain. When my baby is ill that kills me big time. I just wish I could take her pain away every time she's ill.
Wishful thinking.

Let's go shoppin,shall we??!
